To Those Who See the Sun

We crept around trees & campsites looking for the perfect spot to watch the sun come up. As tired as we were, we were determined to watch this sunrise, and the morning chill could not stop us. Pink & orange painted the pale sky as we followed a trail out onto a sliver of a  beach. The rest of the world was black as night still, covered in shadows & darkness, but we could just make out the sign of morning ahead of us. We kept walking.

We laid out the blanket on some rocks & waited as the sun peeked over the Arkansas horizon. It started rising faster & faster, and before I knew it, it was there. Camera glued to my hands, I couldn’t release the shutter fast enough.

It was magnificent, how the world was so dark. And then here comes the sun, bursting forth, literally pushing it all away. The clouds were so thick & dark, but the sun seemed to force them out of the way. Ahava & I sat there, amazed at this glory, at this beauty that seemed to be on display just for us.

Ahava, I said. You know that is what Jesus is like, right?

All this glory & beauty, magnified a million times over, as the Son reveals Himself & banishes darkness. Shadows flee His brilliance. Clouds try to cover Him up but fail because they cannot withstand His might.

Then he showed me a river of the water of life, clear as crystal, coming from the throne of God & of the Lamb, in the middle of its street. On either side of the river was the tree of life, bearing twelve kinds of fruit, yielding its fruit every month; and the leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations. And there will no longer be any curse; and the throne of God & the Lamb will be in it, and His bond-servants will serve Him; they will see His face, and His name will be on their foreheads. And there will no longer be any night; and they will not have need of the light of a lamp nor the light of the sun, because the Lord God will illumine them; and they will reign forever & ever. And he said to me, “These words are faithful & true”; and the Lord, the God of the spirits of the prophets, sent His angel to show to His bond-servants the things which must soon take place. “And behold, I am coming quickly. Blessed is he who heeds the words of prophecy of this book.”

Revelation 22:1-7

It can be so difficult to stop & look at the sun – it’s too early or too late or too bright. There are trees or mountains that block our view. But the sun is always there. We may not see it, but it is always there, waiting for the moment when it will break through the darkness.

I believe in Christ like I believe in the sun – not because I can see it, but because by it I can see everything else.
